Itanagar, March 8: The Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) Gender Council, in collaboration with the Arunachal Press Club (APC), observed International Women’s Day by organizing a sensitization program on “Protection of Women and Child Rights” at the APC premises.
The program aimed to raise awareness about legal protections and responsible reporting on gender and child-related issues.
Inspector Dopi Pakam emphasized the role of law enforcement in safeguarding women and children, addressing the challenges of underreporting gender-based crimes. She urged parents, especially mothers, to maintain open communication with their daughters and warned against early marriage, citing its link to domestic violence. She also clarified that false promises and identity fraud in sexual relationships are criminal offenses and assured that police prioritize justice in such cases. Additionally, she reminded journalists of their ethical duty to protect victim identities.
Jaya Doji, Chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), spoke on the committee’s role in handling child rights violations, domestic violence, and cases involving orphaned children. She explained legal procedures related to adoption and foster care, highlighting the challenges and successes achieved through collaboration with law enforcement and legal experts.
Advocate Kagam Bagra provided an overview of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, emphasizing its gender-neutral provisions and covering various offenses, including non-contact sexual crimes. She stressed the legal obligation to report suspected child abuse under Section 19 of the Act and discussed recent amendments introducing penalties for false accusations. She also urged journalists to uphold ethical standards while reporting on sensitive cases like child abuse and trafficking, cautioning against revealing details that could endanger victims.
APUWJ President Amar Sangno appreciated the efforts of the Gender Council in organizing the program and encouraged journalists to apply the knowledge gained. APUWJ Gender Council Convener Appu Gapak also addressed the gathering.
The event was attended by senior journalist Tongam Rina, APUWJ General Secretary Sonam Jelly, and journalists from various media organizations. Certificates of participation were distributed at the end of the program.
